DOHA, QATAR — Md. Ilias Miah, Chief Executive of the Centre for Environment, Human Rights & Development Forum (CEHRDF), participated in the 2nd World Summit for Social Development (WSSD2) held in Doha, Qatar. Representing frontline civil society perspectives from Bangladesh, he joined the Main Roundtable on Human Rights and Inequality, organized by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
The high-level roundtable convened international delegates, policy leaders, and human rights advocates to assess systemic barriers to equitable development. In his address, Md. Ilias Miah brought forward grassroots realities from Bangladesh and Cox’s Bazar, emphasizing the urgent need to address structural disparities, foster genuine social inclusion, and protect the fundamental rights of marginalized and displaced communities throughout the Global South.
"From Copenhagen to Doha, the message remains the same — true social development must be rooted in human dignity, equality, and fairness, ensuring that no one is left behind," stated the CEHRDF Chief Executive during the dialogue. He stressed that international developmental architecture must move beyond temporary relief measures to institutionalize justice, legal protections, and resilient economic safety nets for populations enduring protracted humanitarian crises.
The discussion also highlighted the compounding intersection between environmental degradation, displacement, and socioeconomic marginalization, urging multilateral agencies and member states to honor equity commitments through shared resources and inclusive decision-making frameworks.
The 2nd World Summit for Social Development brought together global leaders, United Nations dignitaries, and civil society organizations to establish a unified roadmap toward global solidarity, social justice, and systemic equality.
